#GullyTales: The Bustle Of Sassoon Docks

#GullyTales, as the name suggests, is your one-stop-event to learn about the zones that comprise the city you call home. #GullyTales gives you the perfect H.A.L.T (Heritage, Art, Life, Tales) experience of a zone peppered with the most obscure, interesting, fascinating facts...straight from the gully upto the last cutting chai available!

For centuries, Bombay remained a major attraction for traders and colonisers owing to its location, natural ports and her potential for trade and commerce. Bombay only grew in stature over time, change in dynasties and its colonisation by the Portuguese before the final session to the British in 1661 as part of Portuguese Catherine of Braganza's dowry to Charles II of England.

As commerce grew, traders from all over the world started arriving in Bombay to explore business prospects. One such trader, David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jew, arrived in Bombay with his family, went on to establish several businesses and built many prominent structures in Bombay: the original Sassoon Dock being one of them.

One of the oldest docks and the first wet dock constructed in Bombay in 1875, Sassoon Docks is also one of the largest fish markets in the city. The zone offers one of the most interesting and memorable experiences to travellers. Tucked in a corner of the historic Colaba district of South Mumbai, Sassoon Docks is a melting pot of cultures of Kolis, Banjaras, Tamilians, Kannadigas, North Indians and other. The docks bustle with all kinds of fishing activities including a noisy fish market where women line up to sell some of the most famous and the rarest varieties of fish, crabs, oysters, etc. The Sassoon Docks Heritage Walk takes you through this unique zone.
